Q & A

Construction Questions

When will construction begin? How long will construction last?

Demolition on the site began in June 2024. We are aiming to complete construction in Q2 2026. A grand opening event will be planned for early fall 2026.

How will campus life be affected during construction?

Construction is always disruptive, but we will do our best to minimize inconvenience to our students, faculty and staff.

The areas of the campus where construction is taking place, i.e. the dining hall and the upper and lower loggia entrances will be cordoned off and entirely inaccessible by students and other community members for the duration of the construction.

Where will Lower and Upper School students enter the building?

The primary entrance for Lower and Upper School students will be through the Manor House. An alternate exit will be added and marked for routine use and in case of emergencies.

Will the lunch program continue during the Dining Hall construction? Where will students eat lunch?

Crescent’s hot lunch program is integral to the Crescent experience, and the lunch service will continue during construction. A temporary dining hall has been erected in the CCL Cafe area and a portable trailer and temporary kitchen are prepping and serving 1,000 meals daily.

Where will the Coyote’s Den be moved to?

Once construction began, the Coyote’s Den relocated to the top level of the garage at the rear of our campus. While initially intended as a temporary solution, the enthusiastic reception to the new space by CPA volunteers and the Den’s manager suggest this may remain its permanent home.

Will the construction impact the traffic flow in and out of the school?

We aim to have minimal impact on the traffic flow, although some areas of the parking lot may be reserved for construction vehicles.

What safety measures are in place for workers and visitors?

Hoarding will be erected around the construction site to safeguard students from entering the area. Access points will be securely locked after hours and closed at all times, except when construction access is required.

Who are the architects? And how did the school choose them?

Our architect is Perkins & Will, who was selected through an RFP process. P&W is a global design practice and one of the largest architectural firms in North America.

Why does the School need a new dining hall now?

Crescent is the only GTA school that includes a hot lunch program in tuition. It is a well-accepted fact that shared meals provide a natural setting for social interaction. People have the opportunity to engage in conversations and connect on a personal level, fostering relationships and helping community members get to know each other better.

Our current dining hall was built for a school half the size of Crescent School today. The seating capacity needs to be increased to better accommodate our students. The space is institutional and uninspiring. The kitchen is small, antiquated, and inefficient to properly cater to our community. We need a separate servery that we can close off so that the dining hall space can be multi-purposed and used by various stakeholders outside of dining hours.

How can I learn more and ask questions about the project?

Progress reports will be posted to this microsite throughout the project. The Our Way Forward newsletter will provide regular updates on the construction and campaign fundraising.

Fundraising Questions

Does my Parent Annual Giving contribution go towards the campaign?
Yes. Donations to Parent Annual Giving support the capital projects in the Master Campus Plan and Student Financial Assistance, which encapsulate the priorities of the Our Way Forward campaign.
Why is Crescent going public with our fundraising campaign now?

With over 85% of our fundraising goal achieved, we are close to realizing Crescent’s next evolution, but we can’t do it without the support of every member of our community. Now is the time to go public with our campaign to realize our vision.

Why are we calling the campaign Our Way Forward?

The Crescent Way represents everything that makes Crescent School unique. It encompasses how we educate our boys and develop our staff, our caring culture, and our strong spirit of philanthropy. It is what makes our School a great place for our boys to grow and thrive.

Our Way Forward is the next evolution of Crescent School. It builds upon our progressive approach to boys’ education and promotes community, identity, and the Crescent legacy.

How will the funds raised be spent?

The campaign has four priorities: 1) Community Hall, 2) Lower and Upper School Entryway, including the new home of the CPA Coyote’s Den, 3) Lower School Commons and 4) growing the endowment in support of Student Financial Assistance.

A portion of the funds raised has already gone to projects that our boys have been taking full advantage of, such as the resurfacing of Innes Field with the installation of the air-supported dome, and the artificial turf in the Formal Garden. Over $12 million of the funds enabled the purchase of the Rumball Centre in 2021, which is the site of future campaign development.

Why should families whose sons are soon graduating support this campaign?

Everything that Crescent students enjoy today — our beautiful campus and world-class learning spaces and programmatic offerings — have been made possible thanks to the generosity of current and past parents, alumni and friends of Crescent. By donating, you’re paying it forward. You’re helping ensure the school continues to thrive and provide quality education to future students, even if they’re not your children.
